Summary

The volume of tephra is calculated as freshly fallen. This eruption was silicic, although there are no known deposits outside of Iceland. This was a small eruption, but significant because it heralded the beginning of a series of eruptions with 10 year intervals. The tephra layer contained large amounts of fluorine (2000 ppm), which resulted in the death of thousands of animals to the north-west of Hekla. The main axis of tephra fallout was to the north-north west of Hekla. The tephra is dark brown in colour.
