The Hekla 1980 eruption from the Hekla Volcanic System

Source: Hekla Volcanic System
Eruption site: Hekla
VEI:3
Lava volume: 0.1 km3
Tephra volume: 0.060 km3
Start Date:17 August 1980 AD 13:00
End:16 April 1981 AD

Summary

The volume of tephra is calculated as freshly fallen. This eruption was silicic, although there are no known deposits outside of Iceland. This eruption began with a plinian phase and lava was produced from simultaneously from fissures along the summit ridge. Most of the tephra was produced during the first 5 to 6 hours, with the highest amounts falling in the first two. The intensity of the eruption declined after the first day and ceased on August 20th. Activity began again on April 9 1981 when lava was erupted from the summit and craters on the northen side of the volcano. Again fluorine levels were high (1500 to 2000 ppm), but only about 600 sheep were affected.
